Transferring to Speech and Language Sciences at Newcastle University

If you are currently studying on another degree programme at Newcastle University and are interested in transferring to Speech and Language Sciences, it may be possible to apply for an internal transfer.

Internal transfer requests do not normally require a new UCAS application because you are already a Newcastle University student. However, you will still need to meet the admissions requirements for Speech and Language Sciences, and all successful transfers will be for entry into Stage 1 of the programme.

First Step:

Please first check if you meet the entry requirement:

If you meet the requirements:

How do I request a transfer?

  1. Your first step is to contact the Degree Programme Director (DPD) for Speech and Language Sciences with:
    • A-level subjects and grades
    • GCSE subjects and grades
    • A personal statement for the Speech and Language Sciences programme
  2. Under Newcastle University’s programme transfer procedure, approval to transfer can only be given by the DPD of the programme you wish to transfer to. In this case, this means the Speech and Language Sciences DPD rather than the DPD of your current programme.
  3. The DPD will consider your request and may discuss your qualifications, relevant experience and reasons for wanting to transfer. They may also consult the Speech and Language Sciences Admissions Tutor if clarification is needed.
  4. If you meet the minimum entry requirements and would like to proceed, the DPD will refer your request to the Speech and Language Sciences Professional Services team.

What happens next?

  • You will be asked to complete an internal application form. This is designed to ensure that internal transfer applicants are considered as fairly and consistently as applicants applying through UCAS.
  • The application will include information similar to that required through UCAS, including a personal statement. You will also be asked for permission for the admissions team to access your previous admissions records so that your qualifications and reference information can be checked.
  • Your application will then be considered by the Speech and Language Sciences Admissions Tutor in line with the programme’s usual admissions policies and procedures.
  • If an offer is made, it is likely to be based on qualifications you have already achieved and may therefore be unconditional.

Do I need to meet the normal entry requirements?

Yes. Internal transfer applicants must still meet the admissions criteria for Speech and Language Sciences.

Study completed on your current degree may be taken into account as part of the overall picture, particularly if you are studying a related subject such as Linguistics, Medicine or Biomedical Sciences. Where appropriate, the Admissions Tutor may seek advice from the University’s Admissions Office about recognition of prior learning.

However, any successful internal transfer will still be for entry into Stage 1 of the Speech and Language Sciences programme.

When should I apply?

Where possible, you should make your transfer request before the UCAS application deadline.

Requests made before the deadline can be considered alongside applications received through UCAS, provided that the completed internal application is submitted by the relevant deadline.

What if I apply after the UCAS deadline?

Transfer requests received after the UCAS deadline can only be considered if the programme is still open to applications and has capacity to accept additional students.

If the programme is already full, a particularly strong application may still be allowed to proceed to the initial application stage. However, a final decision may need to wait until after A-level results day, when there is a clearer picture of available places.

At that point, transfer applications will be considered alongside other applicants, including UCAS applicants who have narrowly missed their offer conditions and any other internal transfer requests.

For this reason, the likelihood of a successful transfer is lower where a request is made after the UCAS deadline and the programme is already at capacity.

What happens if my application is successful?

If you are offered a place, you will be contacted by the Professional Services team and the Speech and Language Sciences DPD will also be informed.

You will then need to confirm whether you wish to accept the offer. The DPD will advise you on the formal process for transferring into Stage 1 of Speech and Language Sciences.

What if my transfer request is unsuccessful?

If your transfer application is unsuccessful, the Admissions Tutor or DPD may be able to advise you on possible next steps, in the same way that they would for other admissions enquiries.

Please note that deferred internal transfers are not considered.

Thinking about applying?

If you are considering an internal transfer to Speech and Language Sciences, we recommend contacting the Speech and Language Sciences Degree Programme Director as early as possible. They can advise whether an internal transfer is appropriate and guide you through the first stage of the process.
