James O'Hara

Mr O’Hara is a consultant otolaryngologist – head and neck surgeon at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He chairs the Newcastle Head and Neck MDT and ENT Clinical Academic Directorate. His particular clinical interests lie with transoral surgery for oropharyngeal and laryngeal cancer, with an interest in swallowing outcomes following these.  He has experience with transoral laser microsurgery which has translated into transoral robotic surgery recently. He also has particular interests in open partial laryngeal surgery and benign cricopharyngeal surgery, for dysphagia.  Mr O’Hara is a co-applicant on two clinical trials currently recruiting: TOPPITS is assessing the impact of proton pump inhibitors on chronic throat symptoms. NATTINA is evaluating the role of adult tonsillectomy for recurrent tonsillitis.  Mr O’Hara is an associate editor for Clinical Otolaryngology and council member for the Otorhinolaryngology Research Society.
