4 — Walker creative neighbourhood

What’s the context?

Walker is home to many people who are struggling with low incomes, unemployment, a perceived lack of local investment and interest from the local authority. There are low levels of literacy and numeracy amongst people in the ward. But there is a renowned community spirit. The ward has many well-loved and used local community initiatives, which are developing in innovative and exciting ways. Due to the shortage of money to fund such organisations, they often don’t work together as well as they could do. There have been disagreements and sometimes secrecy about upcoming projects due to potential competition. This may lead to struggling organisations not getting the support to help local people in the ways that they need.

What is the challenge?

  • To bring organisations together, to work collaboratively and alongside each other, with a better awareness of what is being offered across the ward.
  • To give residents the opportunity to understand what is happening in the ward, and the chance to participate in a variety of ways.
  • To promote events, education, volunteering opportunities and potentially recruitment and freelance opportunities
  • To offer new local entrepreneurs a platform, resources and local contacts to help getting started

What are the deliverables?

To create a concept for a website which will bring people, projects and businesses closer together.  The structure will provide functions which will be appealing and useful to individuals and groups.

These may include

  • A map of community organisations and businesses in the area
  • Upcoming events/ courses to take part in
  • Upcoming opportunities to volunteer (one off, short or long term)
  • Volunteering opportunities (one off, short or long term)
  • Individual volunteer profiles (interests, experience, qualifications IE a friendly CV)
