8: Approaches for prototyping

Design stage: Prototyping and visualising

In this session, we will review the wide range of approaches to prototyping and visualising your chosen idea. Prototyping does not need to be complicated. There are different understandings of what a prototype is and here we focus on the very early stage of a prototype, a mock-up. Jake Knapp and colleagues suggest that this type of prototyping is alike to building a facade. We will discuss different ways to build facades, including digital tools, paper-based prototypes, and more recent prototyping approaches using 3D printing, for instance. This session should help you make an informed choice as to what method fits your project.

Seminar: Remind yourself of the goal for your project that you defined at the end of stage one. Also keep in mind the story board you produced a couple of weeks ago. Discuss what type of prototype you want to produce to test your idea with your informants.

Team:  Write a design log entry on the prototyping method you choose and why. Begin to prototype your idea.
