Beginners guide to Newcastle University: Zumba Society!

Let’s face it, university life can be very challenging at times, but this is bearable when you have the right friends by your side. You probably left most, if not all, your friends back home or you are new to the toon. So, you might be wondering, where am I going to find new friends?

Clubs and societies can be the way to start! Newcastle University has more than 200 amazing options to choose from, but this can be a bit overwhelming. That’s why we decided to make a series where we give you a brief insight of the most popular and interesting societies, so you can shorten the list and join the ones you’ll love.

Our first society is the Zumba Society! Lucy, the president, answered some questions so you can get a taste of what they do.

What does your society do?

Zumba society provides fun, sociable and energetic dance fitness classes weekly to members. We work with a local zumba instructor who’s great!

As well as our weekly class we run themed ‘Give it a go’ sessions which are open to everyone. Themes have included Halloween, valentines and glitter.

We’ve also opened our classes up to other societies for collaborations including Modern Lagauge Soc with an 80s themed class and bar crawl social.

What does an average social look like?

We love a bar crawl or club night! You can find us requesting Shakira in Flares, taking fab photos in Market Shaker and getting society shoutouts in The Points!

We also offer sober socials; we have pottery painting coming up and we’ve done movie nights and meals!

How do you get involved?

Zumba soc is super welcoming, no dancing ability is required and we love new faces. You just need trainers and water.

Membership can be bought for £12 on the NUSU website and that includes access to all our classes, activities and socials. We have Instagram, a Facebook page and members group and we send a weekly email to members.

Why would you recommend joining this society?

If you’re like me and just want to dance like no one’s watching or you want a workout that doesn’t feel like a workout or you want to meet like-minded people then Zumba Society is for you!
