The voice: investigating mechanisms of identity and change: My research is all about how we control our voices, and how that’s different in people with atypical voices. I’m especially interested in how our environment affects the way that we speak. That could be social– who you’re talking to– or it could be acoustic– what sound is in the background. I look at acoustic changes in things like vowel space, intensity and speech rate, along with changes in cerebral bloodflow measured by fMRI. I’m currently working on a three-year programme of research investigating the links between vocal change, identity and affiliation in people with Tourette’s Syndrome, people who stammer, and neurotypical talkers.
