Accent and Social Justice Workshop 2026

About

Accent is an important part of how people communicate and express identity. In Higher Education (HE), accents can also shape how individuals are perceived, judged, or treated by others. As a research group, we have had a particular interest in accent and social justice over the last few years and ran a workshop in 2022 on this theme.

More recently we have been considering linguistic diversity and accent bias in higher education with plans in motion to conduct a large-scale survey later this year. Before launching our research, we are planning another workshop on 24th June 2026.

This workshop will focus on work on linguistic diversity in the workplace but also anything else surrounding the topic of accent and social justice. Presentations will be on proposed, in-progress, or completed work, and will be 15 minutes + 5 minutes Q&A. Participation will be hybrid online and in person.
