Inspera: Sharing Best Practice Event 2025

Introduction

Colleagues in the Inspera Digital Exams Team of the Learning and Teaching Development Service (LTDS) invited colleagues from Inspera Assessment to visit Newcastle University for the third year in a row to host an on campus event with our users.

Fiona Orel and Ishan Kolhatkar visited Newcastle on Wednesday 5th November for this year’s ‘Inspera: Sharing Best Practice’ Event.

Our Inspera users were invited to come along to find out updates about using Inspera at Newcastle and upcoming features on the Inspera roadmap. The event is a great opportunity for colleagues to learn about how they can enhance their use of Inspera and ensure best practice. The Inspera Digital Exams Team arranged for some demonstrations on features and functionality listed in the agenda below.

The agenda included:

  • Welcome and Introduction – An update from the Inspera Digital Exams Team and update from Inspera Assessment around their Roadmap
  • Inspera demonstration – Rubrics Functionality, Manually Marked Multiple Attempts Assessments and Feedback Release Features
  • Questions and Discussion – Colleagues submitted their questions for Inspera to answer.

Inspera Digital Exams Team

This annual event is a great opportunity to meet members of the Inspera Digital Exams Team and fellow Inspera users. The Inspera Digital Exams Team in LTDS is made up of 5 colleagues who support the set up of centrally-supported, summative digital exams at Newcastle:

  • Maddie Kinnair – Inspera Co-Lead (Digital Assessment Lead)
  • Kimberly May-O’Brien – Inspera Co-Lead (Digital Assessment Lead)
  • Susan Barfield – Digital Assignments/Turnitin Lead (Digital Assessment Lead)
  • Michelle Waters – Digital Exams Coordinator
  • Katy Brennan – Digital Exams Assistant

The Digital Exams Team reported updates around developments in the past year including that the Inspera Co-Leads have spent time further developing and enhancing our Inspera Learning and Teaching webpage. This has become a ‘one stop shop’ for guidance and training and the team are always looking for ways to develop this further. You can find written guidance as well as video demos.

Inspera Features

In this blog post, you can find out more about rubrics, multiple attempts and feedback release features.

Rubrics

Rubrics and ‘bands and criteria’ can be applied to manually marked questions on Inspera. To find out more about using rubrics, check out the Inspera Rubrics webpage.

Multiple Attempts

Module teams can allow their students to take practice auto-marked Inspera exams repeatedly, either by unlimiting the access so a student can submit as many times as they wish, or by setting a defined number of retakes.

More recently, it is now possible to use multiple attempts with manually marked questions. To find out more about using multiple attempts, check out the Inspera Multiple Attempts webpage.

Feedback Release Features

Module Teams can release student feedback on their auto-marked and manual-marked Inspera Digital Exams. The settings to use in Inspera for feedback release and how to make the feedback available for students differ based on the types of questions you have in your exam and what type of feedback you wish to release. To find out more about feedback release options, check out the Inspera Feedback Release webpage.
