Call for Soapbox Science speakers is now open – deadline 26th Feb 2016!
We are excited to announce that Newcastle University will once again be hosting Soapbox Science following our record breaking debut last summer. Would you like to be a part of Soapbox Science Newcastle2016? Our call for speakers is NOW OPEN! If you are female, an academic scientist, researcher or PhD student and are keen to share your science with the people of Newcastle then apply using the following link: http://soapboxscience.org/?page_id=135 . The closing date for applications is Friday the 26th of February 2016.
Soapbox Science is a grass-roots science outreach organisation that brings cutting edge research onto urban streets whilst also promoting the visibility of women in science. We place inspirational speakers on soapboxes and encourage them to engage in and start conversations with the public about their work. For the Newcastle event we’ll be commandeering Grey’s Monument in the City Centre on Saturday June 18th and wowing unsuspecting passers-by with our latest discoveries. Soapbox Science has been running for 5 years with events in UK cities across the country and has attracted media coverage including BBC, The Guardian, Time Out, The Times (Eureka). 2016 is Soapbox Science’s biggest year yet with 12 events planned across the UK the first ever international event in Brisbane, Australia. It also receives great interest from the scientific community, with coverage in Nature, Science and New Scientist.

Bright Club Stand-up comedy training 19th January 2016
Fancy engaging new and exciting audiences?
Want to polish your performance and presentation skills?
Get your research out in the open through the medium of stand up at Bright Club ?
After four years of successful shows, Bright Club Newcastle returns to The Stand on 2nd February at 8.00 pm, and we need academics/researchers from the North East to perform.
Each event is compaired by a professional comedian, with academics and researchers taking to the mic to talk about their subject in a light-hearted and entertaining way.
Training is given to help tailor your material to a comedy audience. This training will take place on 19th January, 12.00-3.00 pm at The Centre for Life and will be run by a professional comedian and science communicator (and previous Bright Club act) Duncan Yellowlees. If you decide to brave the stage and perform there will be further opportunities to rehearse and fine tune your set.

FameLab UK 2016
FameLab UK is back!
Calling all scientists and engineers with a passion for public engagement to participate in FameLab UK 2016!
- FameLab is inviting scientists, mathematicians and engineers across the UK to take part in its flagship science communications competition.
- Contestants have just 3 minutes to convey a scientific concept of their choice.
- They will be judged by leading researchers, media personalities and science policy makers on the content, clarity and charisma of their presentation.
- The UK winner receives £1000 cash prize and £750 to spend on a science communication activity and goes on to compete against over 25 other contestants from around the world at The Times Cheltenham Science Festival in June 2016.
